Islam: A religion founded by Prophet Muhammad, meaning submission to the will of Allah.
Muslims: The followers of Islam who submit to the will of Allah.
Koran: The holy book of the Muslims in which the teachings of Prophet Muhammad were recorded.
Mecca: The town in Arabia where Prophet Muhammad was born, which serves as a holy place for Muslims.
Medina: The town to which Prophet Muhammad and his followers shifted in 622 CE.
Hijrat: The departure of Prophet Muhammad from Mecca to Medina in 622 CE.
Hijri: The Muslim calendar which begins from the year 622 CE.
Abu Bakr: The faithful friend and follower of Prophet Muhammad who was selected as his successor.
Khalifa (or Caliph): A title meaning successor of the Prophet, given to the religious and political head of the Muslim community.
House of Wisdom: An institution established at Baghdad by an Abbasid Caliph to translate the collective wisdom of ancient civilizations into Arabic.
Silk Route (or Road): An ancient trade route connecting China with the Middle East and the Roman empire.
Al Beruni: A Muslim scholar who came to India with Mahmud of Ghazni and authored the historical work Tahqiq-i-Hind.
