Renaissance: The period in Europe from the 14th century CE to the 16th century CE when people became interested in the ideas and culture of ancient Greece and Rome and used these influences in the development of their art and literature.
Feudalism: A form of government based on landholding, where the king granted land in exchange for military support.
Monks: Pious priests who chose to live as hermits in remote, isolated places, devoting their entire lives to spiritual matters and the service of humanity without marrying.
Nuns: Women who devoted their lives to prayer and the service of the poor, the sick, and the oppressed, lived in separate communities, and did not marry.
Monastery: A large, strong, and simple building surrounded by lands where monks stayed, pursued their religious missions, and established centres of scholarship, art, and learning.

Abbey: A large church, together with a group of buildings in which the monks or nuns lived.
