Coda essentials

If you're just getting started with Coda, we’ve created a video series just for you—Coda Essentials. We'll explore the core building blocks of Coda and how they fit together. Each video lesson teaches a new concept and corresponds to a set of instructions on the page.
Lesson 1: Pages
Pages are portions of a doc dedicated to specific information—think of them like tabs in a spreadsheet.

Lesson 2: Page options
Let’s talk about text. Because Coda's a doc, after all.

Lesson 3: Tables
Tables power the magic inside your Coda docs and help you organize data. Coda tables talk to each other, so everyone can filter out noise and work in their preferred way—with their own view.

Lesson 4: Templates
An introduction to drag-and-drop templates, popular compositions of building blocks available right inside your doc. Remember, there's no need to start from scratch.

Lesson 5: Column format
Column formats are the various ways you can support data in a table column, including text, number, select list, and checkbox.

Lesson 6: Conditional format

Lesson 7: Filters & views
Filtering removes extraneous data, leaving only the part of your tables you want to work with.

Lesson 8: Grouping
Grouping organizes table data by bundling common values within a particular column.

Lesson 9: Buttons & controls
A button is a building block that takes action. It can open a hyperlink, add or modify a row, and even copy a doc. Controls—like buttons, select lists, and sliders—make interacting with your doc fun and intuitive for your team.

Lesson 10: Lookups
All Coda tables talk to each other through views or lookups. With lookups, you connect columns across multiple tables via a lookup column or lookup formula.

Lesson 11: Table layouts
Layouts let you see tables in different ways.

Lesson 12: Comments
Comments are an easy way to have conversations about what is happening in your Coda doc.

Lesson 13: Formula basics
Formulas connect building blocks together, filter, reference, tell time, and do math. If you know Excel or SQL, the syntax and vocabulary will be intuitive. If you don’t, try go/formulas.

Lesson 14: Packs
Packs connect your Coda doc to the apps you use everyday — the tools you and your team communicate, code, and design in.

Lesson 15: Automations
Automation is a building block made of triggers and actions. They let you put all those small yet critical tasks on auto-pilot—like emailing the week’s tasks every Monday morning, or handing off assignments when a bug is filed.

Lesson 16: CrossDoc
CrossDoc is a way to sync tables or subsets of tables from one doc to another.

Lesson 17: Publishing
Publishing lets you share your docs with the world.

Lesson 18: Canvas columns
Canvas columns are collaborative, so multiple people can make edits at the same time. And they give you the ability to comment within a table cell. Once you’re there, add any Coda building block, including text, tables, and views. Embed images. Collapse text. Create bulleted lists. Or add a Dory to capture your team’s feedback.

Lesson 19: Workspaces
Organize, access, and share docs in your organization’s workspace.
