“It can be overwhelming to visit a major city, especially one as historically rich as Rome. So we’ve narrowed down the options into a concise list of must see hidden historical gems”

Via Appia Antica

📜 Some history: The Via Appia Antica or Appian Way is one of the oldest roads of Rome and served as an important access road into the city. Originally, the road ran all the way to Brundisium, present-day Brindisi in the heel of Italy. The main goal back then was to move troops more quickly during the Second Samnite War, but also to facilitate day-to-day transport of goods between Rome and Campania.
In Rome, the Via Appia starts at the Porta San Sebastiano.
A little further and you will see the church ‘Domine Quo Vadis’. Tradition has it that Jesus once met Peter here.
After that you will come across a number of catacombs and tombs.

Terme di Caracalla

📜 Some history: The remains of the emperor Caracalla’s vast baths complex are among Rome’s most awe-inspiring ruins. Inaugurated in AD 212, the original 10-hectare site, which comprised baths, gyms, libraries, shops and gardens, was used by up to 8000 people daily. The bathhouse was centred on a frigidarium (cold room), where bathers would stop after the warmer tepidarium and dome-capped caldarium (hot room). Excavations in the 16th and 17th centuries unearthed important sculptures, many of which found their way into the Farnese family's art collection. In summer, the ruins are used to stage spectacular music and ballet performances.

Crypta Balbi

📜 Some history: Visit the ancient Crypta Balbi and embark on a unique journey back in time that retraces over 2,000 years of Rome’s history. Located between the present-day Piazza Venezia and Largo Argentina, the crypt was constructed in the 1st century B.C. Visiting the Crypta Balbi museum is an informative way to realise how Rome has developed over its ancient buildings and left material traces of its thousand-year old transformation in the urban layering. The museum collections illustrate the history of the ancient complex of the Crypta Balbi within the city of Rome.
