Note: The bedroom door has a foam block preventing it from fully closing because gets cranky and loud with closed doors, as cats are wont to! See for stuff about the blinds and light control Temperature management notes
[Fall/Spring] These older NYC buildings have very aggressive steam heating that cannot be controlled from the unit — we recommend opening the windows around sunset (or sooner) and closing them right before you go to bed if it gets too warm.
Because of how our bedroom AC is set up ⚠️ do not open the bedroom window ⚠️: You can open the hallway window as wide as you like.
If it’s still too warm despite that at night, feel free to use the AC. If it gets too dry, there’s also a humidifier compartment behind the standing heater in the bedroom. [Summer] Remember to close all windows if you’re using the AC! If possible leaving the AC on the “Eco” mode all day is better. [Winter] You can’t control the heating in the apartment, so we have 3 blankets of different thickness on the bed/in the shelves accessible from atop the bed. Swap them around as you please. Bed
You sleep up here! Please do not eat on the bed.
2025/04: We *just* finished constructing the lofted bed after a renovation. We haven't fully optimized the sleeping area, so there is no access to power, lights, or charging.
We still have a few finishing touches left like more permanent installation of small details like the electronics box, adding chargers and sidetables up top, etc.
We have been sleeping here since 04/14 with no issues whatsoever, but please be careful going up/down/sitting up on the bed/etc!
Find the up/down controls under the platform near the corner closest to the door. Hold a button down to operate.
You may have to use the steps to reach the controls as it moves up.
This is temporary mounting, it’s okay if it pops out, just leave the controls in the tray!
🚧 Safety notes 🚧
⚠️ While satisfying to watch it go up/down, the electric lofted bed is not a toy! ⚠️
The motors are very strong, the hardwood is hard.
Monitor objects/body parts/cat when operating!
Do not wear slippers or socks onto the steps or up the bed due to non-trivial risk of slipping, dry bare feet are much better grips Generally exercise caution around the bed structure: it’s solid hardwood and can really hurt if it smacks you! Exercise caution when operating, getting on/off, or sitting underneath to avoid personal injury or damage to the bed or items nearby. Always clear off from above and below the bed before raising/lowering. Ensure no heads, limbs, or objects are in the direction of the bed's movement while operating the bed. The min height of the bed, fully lowered is about 4 feet off the ground, < 4 feet from the ceiling. The max height, fully raised is about 8 feet off the ground (plenty of room), < 1 foot from the ceiling. Please keep these in mind when moving the bed and make sure no person or thing is at risk of getting compacted.
[ may go up here even when the bed is fully raised (or stay there while you raise/lower the bed). Don’t worry about him, he’s small & nimble enough to not be in danger! ] The steps are steep! Step carefully up and especially down. ℹ️ The steps are very sturdy, but the cushions are secured in place with a variety of command/velcro strips.
When stepping up/down, lateral foot movement could move the cushions - don’t be alarmed! The steps themselves will stay in place. Always hold onto the bed with one hand when using the steps to keep your footing steady.
Linens (ignore for Kindred)
We have put fresh sheets on the mattress.
Look in the grey linen cubes in the shelf, accessible from atop the bed when lowered.
We recommend just using a flat sheet over the mattress as fitted sheets can fold up the tri-fold mattress.
Underbed lounge/office
Just raise the bed as high as needed to access.
It is still possible for someone to comfortably use this space while seated even if someone else is sleeping above — leave the bed in the lowest position, and watch your head when getting in/up/out or moving about.
You may use the indicated cable to connect your laptop to the monitor. The monitor is a bit old, and if not used for a while may flicker/stripe when turned on after being unused for over a day, especially when it’s cold. Over a minute or so it will return to normal functionality.
