Our character said he took a sword from a recently deceased soldier to protect himself. It would be unlikely these replica swords would be practical to our Spitfire pilot. They are very long to squeeze into the plane’s cockpit and being replicas not made for fighting.
However, during times of war, old weapons and armour are often used because resources become scarce.
For example, there is a helmet at Hexham Gaol which is believed to have been made for the Wars of the Roses in 1400s. The original owner, Duke of Somerset, died in battle and his was body buried in Hexham Abbey with the helmet nearby.
Sir John Fenwick was a Colonel fighting for the Royalist army in the English Civil War of 1600s. Fenwick took the 200 year old helmet for protection, however he was found with a severe head injury which can also be seen on the helmet.
The new weapons of the English Civil War were no match for the dated metal of the helmet.
