Mining Pick Axe [Window on Berwick]

James Smith
chose the
mining pick axe
as his favourite object in the museum.
You will find this object down the mine in the
Window on Berwick display
display.
What do you think our character would do with this?
Coal has been burned in Britain for centuries starting in abbeys and monasteries, households and then fuelled the Industrial Revolution. It needed to be extracted from the ground and it was brack-breaking and treacherous work before modern machinery was introduced.
We now know the damage burning coal does to the climate and we are all trying to transition to cleaner energy alternatives to prevent contributing more pollution to the planet.
If
James Smith
was working in a mine in 1945 some of the work would be done by machines, conveyor belts, etc. however chipping at the coal seam to dislodge chunks of coal would still need a trusty pick axe and a good oak handle.
You can experience a little of what it was being a miner by visiting the or the just outside Edinburgh.
