Coble Boat and Equipment [Window on Berwick]

Our character
Captain Smith
enjoyed the
Coble boat and fishing equipment
It is a large object and quite easy to find in the
Window on Berwick display
display.
The design of this boat developed in the north-east region and the famous rescue by Grace Darling and her father was done in a boat like this.
They were used for fishing and as you can see in our coble, there’re some creels and the all important rope to haul them up from the seabed.
The boat has broad sides and a flat bottom which provides stability on the water. When they were more common you could tell where a coble came from by the bright colours it was painted.
“Seahouses cobles were traditionally blue and white; Staithes cobles blue, red and white; and Cullercoats boats tended to be black and white.”
Have you ever been out on a boat on the River Tweed?
