How many died? [Shop/Reception]

Medical Knowledge [Dodd Room]

Would you believe that you know more important medical procedures than physicians and surgeons who were 🩺 doctors in 1761?
For example, you (hopefully) know to wash/disinfect 🚿 + 🧼 wounds to prevent infection and to wash hands 🤲 to destroy bacteria - especially if there is an open wound nearby!
A medical man (no female doctors until 1870s) believed that illness was caused by miasma or bad air and your body had four humours, if one was out of balance then that was why you were ill.
The diagnosis process was to identify which humour was wrong; black bile, yellow bile, phlegm or blood. It would be rectified, for example, too much blood 🆎 caused redness of the complexion and therefore the physician would use leeches or take a knife to open a vein and bleed the patient 🩸🩸.
Imagine having a broken arm and not being able to get an x-ray to locate the damage, reset the bone to the correct location and allow it to bind. All without any pain relief.
If an infection happened, amputation of the limb 🪚 was the best option to prevent death, but resulted in a success rate of 50-80%, depending on which surgeon you could afford.
