A lawyer proposed there were 52 dead and 49 wounded, nearly 100 years later it was published as the most accurate record. Initial reports on the day were 18-40 dead.
Medical knowledge was very limited and there is no doubt many of those wounded will have died as a result of the injury within days, weeks or months due to infection.
Considering when the soldiers started shooting, there were 5000 men, women and children in the square with a handful of small exit alleys to escape through, that number seems low.
Luckily the rifles are not easy to fire successively and there must have been fatigue in the soldiers from standing all day.
That said, it was a dark day in Hexham and recent estimations suggest up to 300 were wounded but never recorded because they fled to avoid any risk of being punished for their attendance at the protest.
