What was the ballot for? [Lift]

As a market town for the area Hexham had busy days in the Market Square. However, the crowd which assembled on Monday the 9th of March was not a regular crowd.
The King and his government wanted an army to protect the country, to fight wars with France and others.
The last war fought on British soil, the Battle of Culloden was only 15 years ago. You may know 1776 is when the American War of Independence.
They recruited militia to support paid soldiers by a ballot.
All males aged 18 to 50 years old were eligible to be picked for the Militia, up to the number they required. Hexham was the market town of the region and on the cold and on Sunday the 8th of March 1761 the government representatives arrived.
They were here to hold a ballot in the Town Hall and select names from those on the ballot list to join the Militia.
