Who paid for Spitfires? [Burrell Gallery]

Communities were invited to raise money for “gifts of war” to support the building of planes and ships.
It was common to see Spitfire Funds and some 1500 planes are estimated to have been bought by businesses, communities and the like during the war. They got to name the plane!
During the warship week in February 1942 people of Berwick raised £83,000.
It paid for an armed trawler minesweeper called HMT Hazel. During the war the area raised money for a squadron of 12 bombers, several spitfires and a destroyer.
