Blackouts in the Second World War [Medieval Gallery]

Lighting restriction regulations demanding blackout hours began on the 1st of September 1939 two days before war was declared.

To prevent any passing any planes or bombers from seeing where activity was no light was permitted to be seen in any buildings, especially not factories.

Can you imagine flying over Northumberland at night with not a light to be seen?
