What is Rhythm?

Rhythm is the pattern of sounds and silences in music. It’s what makes you tap your foot, nod your head, or dance along to a song. Rhythm is all about timing, and timing is all about math!
Fractions in Music
Think of a whole note as a delicious pie. Just like you can slice a pie into halves, quarters, and eighths, you can divide a whole note into smaller parts:
Whole Note: 1 pie (or 1 whole note)
Half note: 1/2 pie (or 2 half notes make 1 whole note
Quarter note: 1/4 pie (or 4 quarter notes make 1 whole note)
Eighth note: 1/8 pie (or 8 eighth notes make 1 whole note)
Imagine you’re a composer, and you need to fill a measure ( a segment of time in music) with 4 beats. You could use:
1 half note, 1 quarter note, and 2 eighth notes
4 quarter notes
2 half notes
Each combination adds up to the same total, just like different fractions can add up to 1.

Ratios and Rhythm
Ratios help us understand the relationship between different note lengths. For example, if a string instrument is plucked so that the entire length of the string vibrates, it produces a specific pitch. If you touch the string at the halfway point and pluck it again, the pitch is an octave higher. This is a 2:1 ratio-the length of the string when it’s halved.
Patterns in Music
Music is full of patterns, just like math. Here are a few examples:
Melodies: think of “Three Blind Mice.” The melody repeats, creating a pattern.
Scales: A major scale follows a specific pattern of whole and half steps.
Rhythm: The repeating pattern of strong and weak beats in a piece of music.
Try It!
Let’s feel the rhythm! Music that people marcMarch to often has 4 beats per measure, with a strong first and third beat. Try tapping your hand on your knee in a steady 1-2-3-4 beat, emphasizing beats 1 and 3. Now, switch to a rock rhythm by emphasizing beats 2 and 4. Feel the difference?
