Guided Steps

Let’s try identifying a constellation using it’s geometric pattern. Look for the Big Dipper, part of the Ursa Major constellation. It’s shaped like a ladle and is one of the most recognizable patterns in the northern sky. Once you spot it, try finding is aligned with the handle of the Big Dipper.

Practice

Imagine you’re an ancient sailor navigating the seas. You need to find your way using the stars. Your task is to locate the North Star using the Big Dipper. Can you identify the pattern and use it to find your direction?

Answer and Explanation

Step 1: Locate the Big Dipper in the northern sky. It’s shaped like a ladle with a long handle.
Step 2: Follow the two stars at the end of the “bowl” of the Big Dipper. They point directly to the North Star, Polaris.
By using this method, sailors could always find true north, no matter where they were on the ocean. Great job! You’ve just navigated like an ancient mariner.

Interesting Fact

Did you know that the ancient Greeks used the stars to predict the future? They believed that the positions of the stars and planets could influence human events. This practice, known as astrology, was deeply intertwined with their understanding of the cosmos. While astrology isn’t considered a science today, it highlights how humans have always sought to find meaning in the stars.
