Rules and policies

Policies
Deadlines: Deadlines are absolute unless negotiated in advance with the instructor.
Absences: You are allowed three unchallenged absences during the term. Any absences beyond that one will each result in a one- deduction from your overall class grade. The only excused absences are to conduct interviews with subjects for this class. I do not need doctor's notes or any other documentation; save your absences for when you need them. See below for COVID-related absences.
If you have a major medical or other emergency that results in more than one absence, you must provide documentation.
Being late counts as being absent.
Tech limits: You are expected to bring a (muted) smartphone or a laptop to class for specific assignments. However, computers and phones should be closed and face down except during designated activities. You should have a notebook in which to take notes during class.
You are at a time in your life when many people experience difficult personal challenges, be they deaths in the family, medical emergencies, psychiatric difficulties, or many others. If life goes sideways for you, let me know as soon as you can and we'll figure out a plan to adjust deadlines and responsibilities so you can take care of your responsibilities while having the experiences that will make the course successful for you. But don't come to me after a deadline claiming personal reasons for failing to meet it. We can work through problems on the front end, but the back end is much harder.
