All males in the area aged 18 to 50 years old were able to be chosen to join the militia.

However some exemptions existed, would you be included in the ballot list or exempt?

Gentry,

land owner,

army officer,

articled clerk,

apprentice,

Member of two universities,

ministers of religion,

seafarer.

Also ineligible were Roman Catholics because they would not take the oath denying their faith.
