The BEST way to use social media so you’re not unintentionally hurting your chances

A word of caution about social media

Don’t post anything stupid on your social media
No drinking, drugs, illegal activity, immaturity, hating, etc.
Keep your profile family friendly.
Lots of players lose scholarship opportunities because of social media. Yes — this is a real thing.
Keep in mind that when I was in college, we would check the social media of recruits before their visits. So if you wouldn’t be comfortable with your future teammates seeing your profile, you might need to make some changes.
Social media is less about making moves in the recruiting process, and more about not doing anything stupid.
Important: not all coaches are on social media, but all coaches have email addresses. Go where the flock is.

What does it mean if a coach follows me or likes my picture/video?

Truthfully? There’s no way of knowing exactly what his intentions are.
But...they’re likely at least somewhat interested.
Send them an email
Keep in mind that we don’t care about “profile views,” we care about direct connections with coaches. That’s the only thing that matters.
Focus more on the schools that you’re emailing with and talking to than the schools that “follow” you on social media.
Don’t play the “what if” game. It can lead you to make terrible decisions.

What do I do if a coach DMs me?

This will likely be rare, but it does happen occasionally.
If it does, let him take the reins in the conversation.
If he has a question, answer it.
If he compliments you, say thank you.
If the conversation doesn’t go any further, send him an email with video.

Should I DM coaches?

No
It’s incredibly hard to prove your value in a professional manner over DM.
I have a good friend who’s a junior college coach. He said he’s willing to recruit a player who reaches out to him over DM, but has never seen a single player do it well.
Don’t take these odds — just use email.

Should I make a social media page for all my videos?

This is similar to a YouTube page
If you want to do it in addition to a YT page, sure. But don’t do it instead of a YT page.
Keep in mind...
Not all coaches are on social media
Sharing links is not as clean of a transition to another tab
Some athletes have asked about creating a website for themselves. I think this is a better idea than a social media page, but it’s likely overkill. You can get the same effect with a lot less work by using YouTube.

Last thing about social media

Social media is “hot”
It is not nearly as important as some people think it is.
There’s a ton of bad advice going around about social media
It’s easy to make mistakes on SM, and the upside isn’t worth it
Stick to email — it’s a safer bet
