How to use texting to your advantage (and avoid the awkward interactions)

Purpose of texting

Quick exchanges or questions

Nothing significant happens over text
As a general rule, don’t text the coach unless he texts you first. If you need to contact him, use email unless he tells you otherwise.

If you’re going to send a text, here’s how to do it well

Treat it like an email — be professional, full sentences, proofread it. No “impulse texts
Keep the text messages short. If it’s longer than a sentence or two, use email instead.
Be kind and polite. Recognize that when a coach receives your text message, he could be holding his daughter on the couch. Respect his time.
UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES SHOULD YOU TEXT A COACH BEFORE YOU’VE HAD ANY OTHER INTERACTIONS WITH HIM

Should you send video over text?

99.9% of the time — no.
If a coach texts you and asks for a quick video, send it over to him. Otherwise, use email to send videos.
