Step 1: Data gathering



We scraped the following data from
fortnite.gg
⁠
on October 9th 2023 for all 150 current categories:
how many total players across the Top 20 games in the category
The full source data is available at
Full Dataset
⁠
We then discarded any categories that had fewer than 2000 total players across all Top 20 maps in that category as insufficiently popular to consider in our initial analysis. This left 45 categories in consideration.
For these we collected the following data:
how many islands are in the category
how many of them are ‘active’ (i.e. have more than 20 players)
what are the maximum, median and minimum players for games in the top 20 for that category

To focus our attention, we disregarded all games from unpromising categories. We did this by filtering out:
Categories whose islands have max player counts of <1000 (i.e. small player base)
Categories whose median Top 20 player count is <500 (i.e. steep drop off that indicates category is dominated by a small number of games):


That left us with these islands:

To find the most promising contenders we filtered to find categories that matched our heuristics for a promising category
categories with less than 2500 maps (room to grow)
categories with >5% ratio of active maps (i.e players are actively playing at least 5% of the available maps in the category
