Garbage room
The garbage room door is next to the main entrance gate.
We replaced the lock and every flat has been given a key (Feb 2025). If you’ve lost yours, you can get a replacement at the hardware store: key number M24B. Alternatively, the shared key is in the lock box (code 3456) on the inside wall of the staircase by flat number 3. Please return the shared key immediately after use and close the lock box again.
collects garbage on Wednesdays. Farrington will wheel the bins out (and back in, but if the city collects late —as it sometimes does— we ask residents to wheel it back into the garbage room at night as to not get stolen). 🚮 Normal garbage
Place closed bags in the plain black wheelie bins in the garbage room; no loose garbage items, please.
♻️ Recycling
There are recycling bins with yellow lids in the trash room. You can mix different recyclable items together (glass, tin cans, plastic) but make sure that the items are properly rinsed and also in a closed bag.
Please don’t put individual loose items in the recycling bin. Don’t put anything that isn’t recyclable in the recycling bins — see the list further down of what is and isn’t recycled.
Recycling is collected weekly, by . They have a key to the recycling room. 🧑🌾 Composting
We are running a six month trial (starting March 2026) with a composting company called GOOI. There will be a 45L tub in the “composting” area of the garbage room.
They will pick up all our compost weekly, and then give it to local farms near Cape Town ❤️
Here are the composting rules:
All compost needs to be in compostable / biodegradable bags. You can find the green “Bonnie Bio” or similar in any supermarket or online (they’re usually used for dog poo!), for pretty cheap (a roll is ~R30). Please make sure you close the tub lid COMPLETELY, to avoid an insect/roach infestation. ❌ 🥩 NO MEAT (chicken, beef, pork, fish) ❌ 🧀 NO DAIRY (cheese, cream, etc). ✅ 🥗 All other food scraps are okay. ✅ ☕️ Tea bags and coffee grinds are OK Plant matter (e.g. a dead leaves) also fine. Let’s help local farms and reduce landfill waste together 🌳
📦 Cardboard boxes
Please break down and flatten cardboard boxes, you can place them next to the wall in the trash room.
