This is a real concern and something the owners and trustees take very seriously. Unfortunately, we had a break-in into one of the units recently. There have also been intrusions into the common property (thieves climbing over the wall or people entering the complex when the electric gates are kept open), and theft from some of the cars and garages. Please remember to keep garages locked with quality locks, lock your doors and security gates, and don’t leave anything in vehicles.
It is very important for us to be both proactive and reactive with crime: do our best to prevent it from happening and to report it if it has happened (and helping others by doing so). The City of Cape Town and Western Cape Government allocate crime fighting resources based on statistics, not complaints on social media. If crime isn’t formally reported, it isn’t counted, and we won’t receive more help or money in that regard.
Emergencies
If you find yourself in a crisis situation, contact or (free) from a mobile phone or from a landline. You can also hit the SOS button in the Buzzer app, below. You can also call Law Enforcement (0215961999) to send a patrol vehicle for nuisances (noise disturbance, public drunkenness), and various municipal issues.
Tamboerskloof Crimenow WhatsApp group
It is free to become a TBKWatch member (please do so, ). Members will be added to the Crimenow WhatsApp group, where you can easily submit (and monitor) crime and suspicious activity in the neighbourhood. Many break-ins have been thwarted, and working with CBAR and local law enforcement, many criminals have been arrested due to the community’s contribution. Buzzer app
Our ward councilor and the City’s Head of Security spoke highly of the (Android and iOS). It’s a free, community-driven app to help keep a neighbourhood safe and well-kept with things including: instant SOS; reporting of incidents; reporting of fires; reporting car accidents.
When you tap the “Report” button you’ll see the following screen:
Include the address of the incident and as much information as what will be useful. You can also upload pictures/videos in your report, or follow and add comment to someone else's public report (like if you can see a different angle of a fire and upload a photo). Dispatch then sends the fire brigade, paramedics, CCID/CBAR patrols, the police, and so on.
(It's important to only comment on other people's reports if you can provide something useful to dispatch about that specific incident).
If you tap on the Alerts section, you’ll see all the things that have been reported in the past few weeks, including the response (was a vehicle sent, what did they find; was it logged with the municipality etc.)
Suspicious activities & vehicles
In addition to the reporting of homeless encampments (as explained in ), you can report suspicious vehicles and people (like someone walking up the street, looking into cars, checking door handles) and they can send the WatchCom CBAR vehicle. (You can also report suspicious activities in the Buzzer app, as explained above.)
Outdoor emergencies
Everyone here is encouraged (and to tell friends / visitors) to save both TMNP Emergencies (+27861106417) and Wilderness Search & Rescue (+27219370300). People who have saved (and used) these numbers have saved lives in the past.
Call Wilderness S&R immediately if you or anyone else are stuck, lost, or injured in any non-urban setting (meaning: Table Mountain, Lion's Head, or anywhere else outdoors in the province) so that they can send a retrieve party or helicopter. There is no cost to you (including the helicopter, if needed) even if you don't have medical aid or other insurance, even if you're not South African. Don’t put your life or the lives of others at risk.
Cameras & electric fencing
Werner (unit 10) is part of an LPR/CCTV group that has been doing a lot of good work monitoring and preventing neighbourhood crime. The camera network is growing (more added to Tamboerskloof) and getting better over time (upgraded cameras with AI monitoring; improved software; sharing camera info with other neighbourhoods).
If anyone ever has something stolen from their car, garage, or unit, please reach out with a police case number ASAP; they may be able to look at the movement of vehicles and people on the street the day/night of the incident. There was a car stolen in the neighbourhood and they recovered it, due to the sharing of the camera/license plate feed.
Werner has gotten quotes for installing smart cameras at Bagamoya and to be added to the network. Crime that happens on or in front of our property could be followed elsewhere in Tamboerskloof and other neighbourhoods (including license plate recognition). The trustees will decide on this and other security matters in 2024.
Melani has gotten quotes and the trustees will consider adding electric fencing to the front of the building.
Needles
You might notice discarded pink syringes and needles in the neighbourhood. These are from a free needle exchange program, reduces the transmission of TB and HIV among drug users (with further assistance and programs to help addicted individuals on a path towards recovery). Unfortunately, some users don’t discard of the needles properly: a real concern for residents in the neighbourhood.
You can call (or WhatsApp) the TB HIV Care hotline, 079 589 8834, as per by our councilperson. Provide an address and other useful information (like photos) about where the needles can be found. Public illicit drug use can be reported to Law Enforcement (0215961999) or via the Buzzer app or via the TBKWatch CrimeNow WhatsApp group.
