We added electric fencing around the front entrance and sides of Bagamoya in June 2024. We used . If there are issues with the electric fence, please help troubleshoot it, as below. The fence should always be on
There are pulsing lights that indicate if the electric fence is active. A blue oval-shaped unit (which pulses red) on the left side of the main gate, visible from the entrance walkways; another round red one (which pulses white) at the middle of the rear parking (above parking bay 7), visible from the balconies.
These lights should continuously be monitored to make sure that the fence is still in fact on.
You can also look on the energiser inside the garbage room, on the wall, and you should see (and hear) pulsing lights.
There is an additional battery that will provide power to the electric fence during load-shedding for six to eight hours. It should also be checked from time to time to make sure that it functions properly during power outages.
How the fence gets triggered
If the fence is triggered —which could happen by someone touching it or covering it with a blanket, but also potentially an animal, or wet plants during a storm— the fence alarm will go off.
We don’t have armed response, so this is only an additional deterrent (in addition to the high voltage) for a potential intruder and to alert (or wake up) the residents who can check from their windows on either side if they see anything.
The alarm will go off for four minutes and then turn off by itself.
The frustrating part of this is that whenever these four minutes have passed (the alarm turned off again), the fence will be inactive (meaning we don’t have the additional security).
So, if the fence notification light pulses, the fence is on (as it should be, unless someone is doing maintenance and turned it off for that reason). If it isn’t on, find out why, and please turn it back on.
If the (much brighter) alarm notification light pulses, it means the alarm went off and the fence is off. Find out why, and please turn it back on.
Those with a tag or remote (see below) can turn the fence off or reactivate it as needed. The tags enable or disable the fence by tapping the energiser in the garbage room, the remotes work from further away.
See the full video for how it works and how to enable, disable, and reset the system: The following owners have tags or remotes:
Unit 2. Carlo & Dries: Remote. Unit 6. Gavin & Balti: Remote. Unit 10. Werner & Charlotte: Tag. During peak holidays, those with tags/remotes should consider leaving it in a lock box or with a neighbour who will be around. We can order more tags/remotes for R250 each from the installer.
The garden apartment, Unit 1, also has electric fencing on the Burnside wall, but it’s only for that unit and that exclusive use area.
