Project

You will pursue a major project relevant to college sports and your own personal interests over the course of the semester.
The exact form of that project is up to you, largely depending on your professional interests and aspirations:
Students planning careers in media are advised to do a major reporting project such as a 3,000-word story or 5-7 minute feature video with accompanying graphics and other multimedia elements.
Those planning careers as practitioners in higher education and athletics should consider a case study diving deep into a relevant issue and examining lessons learned for institutions and individuals.
Those planning to be researchers are expected to pursue a scholarly project that would eventually take the form of at least a paper prospectus if not a complete paper. That is, if the semester does not provide enough time to gather data, the final product should consist of an introduction, literature review, research questions, and data and methods.
The schedule for this project will go as follows. Missing deadline on any one of these mileposts will result in a 10% deduction in your grade:
By Sept. 1: One (short) paragraph description on at least five potential projects you’re interested in pursuing. If you already have an idea well-formed, I will accept it with a well-developed description of the project (roughly a page).
By Sept. 21: A work plan explaining your final project, what materials/interviews/information you need to complete it, and short descriptions of each element (e.g. outline of sections or story components)
By Oct. 5: A complete literature review or document with background research elements.
By Nov. 2: A complete draft
By Nov. 30: A final draft and a presentation for class
