Class leadership (20%)
Over the course of the semester, each student will be responsible for leading 1-2 hours of the weekly seminar (roughly half the class). Students can do this in teams or go solo.
Pick a topic of particular interest on the schedule or propose an alternate that fits in the overall framework.
Assign additional readings as appropriate.
Design an instructional activity (lecture, class discussion, guest speaker, alternative format) to bring greater understanding to the topic.
Execute on the schedule.
I will ask for your top three choices of weeks by Wednesday, August 24.
Independent project (50% of final grade)
You will pursue a major project relevant to college sports and your own personal interests over the course of the semester.
The exact form of that project is up to you, largely depending on your professional interests and aspirations:
Students planning careers in media are advised to do a major reporting project such as a 3,000-word story or 5-7 minute feature video with accompanying graphics and other multimedia elements.
Those planning careers as practitioners in higher education and athletics should consider a case study diving deep into a relevant issue and examining lessons learned for institutions and individuals.
Those planning to be researchers are expected to pursue a scholarly project that would eventually take the form of at least a paper prospectus if not a complete paper. That is, if the semester does not provide enough time to gather data, the final product should consist of an introduction, literature review, research questions, and data and methods.
The schedule for this project is on the project page. Missing deadline on any one of these mileposts will result in a 10% deduction in your grade.
Participation (15%)
You will be evaluated on your participation in in-class and online reading discussions over the course of the semester. You are expected to contribute regularly; we will do a variety of small-group and online discussions if speaking in front of an entire class is problematic.
Grade notes: Absences beyond 1 will count against your participation grade and thus against your overall grade for the course.
Weekly reflections (15%)
Each week you’ll have a short responsive post for the readings due the Wednesday before class.
These will help me shape my own lecture plans as well as giving classmates further insight into your responses to the readings.
