Along with learning the basics of product and getting hands-on experience, connecting with other product managers (and hiring managers) is the most impactful thing you can do to get a job in product. A lot of people hate the idea of networking. I used to hate networking too, but I realized I do enjoy meeting new people and getting to know them better. That is what real networking is - it's not you trying to sell yourself, but instead getting to learn about another person and genuinely trying to help them. And of course, as you try to help others, most people will naturally try to help you also.
Building your network is critical to getting your first job in product, finding a mentor, and also for continuing to grow your career. Here's what I've found to be most effective:
Find product managers on LinkedIn and send them a message. Make sure your message is personal to them and not just a generic copy-paste spam.
Join relevant product slack communities, such as the Product School community or Lenny’s newsletter
Attend an in-person event
Ask product managers at your existing company for an introduction
Attend a product conference (ProductCon is one that is virtual and free)
