What is the Riot Act [Milburn Room]

Introduced by George I in 1715, the Riot Act allowed those in charge of enforcing the law (Justice of the Peace, Mayor or Sheriff) to order groups of 12 or more to go home.
Our Sovereign Lord the King chargeth and commandeth all persons being assembled immediately to disperse themselves and peaceably to depart to their habitations, or to their lawful business, upon the pains contained in the Act made in the first year of King George for preventing tumults and riotous assemblies. God save the King
Anyone defying the Riot Act and still there one hour later might be held guilty and face substantial punishment, like life imprisonment.
