SPED
Special Education: The term “SPED” should be used to describe a department or program, but NEVER a person.

IEP
Individualized Education Plan: Details accommodations and modifications required by federal law (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act of 2004 AKA “IDEA”) for a student receiving special education services.

504 Plan
Similar to an IEP, this plan details accommodations for a student receiving special education services required by federal civil rights law (Rehabilitation act of 1973). Students with 504 Plans have disabilities that fall outside the scope of an IEP.

ENL / ESL
English as a New Language / English as a Second Language: Describes a school department designed to address the needs of students who do not speak English as their first/native language (ELLs).

ELL
English Language Learner: A student who does not speak English as their first/native language.

ILP
Individual Learning Plan: Details accommodations and modifications required for an ENL student’s success. These plans must be enforced by schools, as per EEOA (the Equal Education Opportunities Act of 1974).

Differentiation
Tailoring instruction, materials, or assignments to meet individual students’ needs

Enrichment
Additional and/or advanced course content provided to excelling students to meet their need for challenge
