A big part of what venture capitalists do is source startups. In some funds, they have their analysts do all sourcing work and no due diligence. Sourcing startups is one of the biggest things an aspiring VC should know how to do before even working at a firm. Sourcing startups is how you as an aspiring VC can build up your network of both founders and investors. A great example of this is to be a VC before actually becoming a VC.
Examples of how I’ve seen people get a role in VC was writing thought pieces and research articles on different industries and talking to founders that way along with my great friend
at ZFoundr. He spent time meeting founders that were raising and sharing their stories on a newsletter to investors that got him to meet both VCs and founders and eventually, landed him a role in the space.
