How a Fashion Brand Finally Trusted Its Shopify Numbers

Turning Confusing Refund Data into CFO-Ready Insights
2-year retainer contract

Story:

Shopify’s native reporting can make even simple revenue questions feel impossible to answer, especially when refunds, partial returns, or order adjustments come into play. For a fast-growing DTC apparel brand, this lack of clarity left its finance team second-guessing sales metrics and struggling to reconcile true daily revenue. LazyAnalyst designed and implemented a complete Domo reporting environment that pulled data directly from Shopify’s APIs, engineered accurate refund logic, and produced a single source of truth for the CFO. With automated refreshes and detailed SQL workflows in Domo, the team finally had clear, reliable, and on-demand visibility into their real business performance.

Challenges:

Confusing and inconsistent Shopify reports caused discrepancies between transaction-date and refund-date reporting.
No clear way to isolate partial refunds or returns in Shopify’s front-end reports.
Limited visibility into true daily sales performance, making financial reporting and forecasting unreliable.
Manual reconciliation slowed decision-making for the CFO and finance team.

Solutions:

Connected Shopify’s core data endpoints (orders, transactions, products, refunds, customers) directly into Domo via its native connector.
Engineered SQL-based data models in Domo to calculate accurate refund logic and align refund timing with finance reporting standards.
Built a unified CFO dashboard consolidating sales, refunds, and returns, with toggles for transaction date vs. refund date analysis.
Established automated data refreshes and flexible metrics for ad-hoc financial requests.

Outcomes:

Accurate, trusted metrics: The Finance team gained a single source of truth for sales and refunds.
Faster reporting: Replaced manual reconciliation with automated refreshes and on-demand dashboards.
Smarter financial insights: The ability to toggle between order-date and refund-date views revealed clearer revenue patterns.
Greater confidence in data: Leadership could rely on numbers that finally matched their Shopify financials.

Testimonial:

Corinna is an excellent data analyst. She is 100% the best choice on probably the entire internet for Domo work. She is extremely intelligent, insightful, and hard working. She built an entire Domo instance our from scratch for us. She is also well versed in other more reasonable and affordable reporting systems than Domo. She did a great job of matching our Domo reporting up to how Shopify displays the reporting (which is entirely different than what its back end data systems say). I cannot sing her praises enough. The only reason our contract eventually ended was due to current direction of our eCommerce store - I hope as the economy picks up, we have the business need to work with Corinna again, she is definitely my go to data analyst.
