3 Years of Trust and One Ferrari Later: The Data Journey That Transformed a Legal Tech Company

Story

For 3 years, LazyAnalyst has been the long-term data partner to a legal tech company offering Dashboard-as-a-Service (DaaS) to law firms. Back then, we implemented their first custom pipelines, capturing data from Lead Docket and RingCentral, funneling it into BigQuery, and visualizing key insights in Looker Studio. That lean setup, built under tight budget constraints, helped them onboard their first 20 clients and validate product-market fit. We maintained the pipelines, monitored performance, and iterated on improvements, all under a low-touch, high-trust retainer. But as client demands increased, the company tried to outsource new data projects to cheaper offshore developers. The result? Unstable pipelines, poor documentation, and no clear architecture, stalling growth and draining internal resources. Eventually, the CEO stepped in personally and asked us to rebuild the entire system from scratch: “make it a Ferrari.” This time, with the budget, backing, and business urgency to match.

Challenges

Outgrown MVP Infrastructure: BigQuery and Looker Studio initially worked well, but struggled to handle growing data volumes and real-time needs.

Failed Outsourcing Attempts: External devs couldn’t deliver the quality or scalability needed, leading to rework, risk, and leadership frustration.

No Strategic Architecture: Years of piecemeal builds created tech debt, duplicate logic, and inconsistent standards.

Key Data Gaps: Lead Docket and RingCentral’s front ends hid critical data, such as deleted leads or call outcome metadata.

Manual Client Setup: New law firms couldn’t be onboarded efficiently, slowing time-to-value.

Solutions

From Strategy to Execution: LazyAnalyst not only delivered the upgraded architecture but also designed the strategy in direct collaboration with the CEO.

Enterprise Architecture Overhaul: We migrated the stack from BigQuery to Databricks for flexible, large-scale processing and switched from Looker Studio to Domo to provide rich, secure, client-facing dashboards.

Pipeline Migrations & Upgrades: We rebuilt and optimized the custom connectors for Lead Docket and RingCentral, unlocking previously inaccessible data and enabling client-specific provisioning. We integrated Filevine from scratch into Databricks, expanding the insights the client could offer to legal customers.

Templated Client Provisioning: New clients now spin up automatically via reusable database logic and dashboard templates.

Secure & Scalable: SOC2-compliant API key storage, schema management, and monitoring workflows ensure long-term stability.
