Control Panel
enables the user to change various computer hardware and software features.
Control Panel Applets
Internet Options Applet
Lets you manage how the internet is used on your computer.
used when you want to configure the browser environment for internet explorer and the programs used to work with files found online. There are 7 Tabs in this applet:
General Tab
where you can set your default home page, how the browser tab operates, and most importantly control your browsing history, cookies, passwords, and web form entries.
It gives you the ability to change options for what shows up in the browser.
You’ll also find the appearance settings here as well : Colors, Languages, Fonts, and Accessibility.
Security
This tab allows you to configure how the browser reacts to websites that are in the 4 different internet zones.
There are 4 different internet Zones:
Internet
This zone is made up of the entire internet (Not including the websites you have in the other 3 categories though)
Local Intranet
A private network contained within an enterprise that is used to securely share company information and resources among fellow employees.
A Local LAN and the most secure internet environment is here.
Trusted Sites
The section of the internet that composes of websites that you’re placing a high level of trust into.
Because you’re placing a high level of trust into these websites, your system will give them broader browser control + functionality.
Restricted Sites
These are the most damaging and malicious sections + websites of the internet.
Your PC is the most secure when accessing these websites due to the direct immediate threat these websites possess.
Privacy
Tab controls what private information your local browser will provide to the website you are visiting
You can control advanced cookies settings, enable pop-up blockers, and use in-private browsing which disables tools bars and extensions for certain websites
Content
Allows you to view + edit information on encryption or identification certificates
Auto-complete is a feature that gives you suggestions as you type into a URL bar or search bar
Connections
Tab used if you’re making connections through a VPN or Proxy
Where you can setup VPN information and configure proxy server information (If you’re using a local proxy server) and configure the LAN settings so they are compatible with the VPN & Proxy server information as well.
Programs
Manages how the browser opens links
Manages any add-ons in the browser and manage any 3rd party utilities that are used in conjunction with the browser.
Advanced
Provides you granular control over some browser settings
Includes the “Reset Internet Explorer Settings” button which resets IE to it’s factory settings.
Display Settings
The display applet has been removed from the windows 10 control panel. Changing display settings is now done through the settings app in windows 10.
You can change:
display resolution
Ex. 1080x920
Can be adjusted to fit however big your monitor is
display adapter properties
refresh rate
The number of times per second the screen can be overwritten
60Hz per second is a good number to be at
Color Depth
The depth and range of colors your PC can support
Set this to the highest point possible for your hardware
User Accounts Applet
allows you to view and create local user accounts for the windows OS
You can also change the account name that appears on the Welcome and Start screen
You can also change the account type by selecting the radio buttons of either Standard or Administrator
Also allows you change the User Account Control (UAC) settings for the OS.
File Folder Options Applet
this applet is used to make all kinds of simple + advanced changes to how folders look and act
One of the most commonly used feature in this applet is to either toggle or show hide hidden files
You can edit how each new window in folder open up
You can choose if each folder opens up after a double click or just a single click
How to access hidden files
Open the File Explorer Options applet in Windows Control Panel, view tab → advanced settings → show hidden files and folders
System Applet
control panel applet that is used to view basic information about your computer like the OS version, current service pack, basic hardware stats like the CPU speed & RAM amount
Windows Firewall Applet
control panel applet that can be used to manage the firewall included with the OS.
Power Options Applet
control panel applet that allows you to configure a power plan dictating when devices ( the device that you’re on ) will turn off or be put to sleep.
Different Power modes
Sleep
Sleep mode is the same as standby mode which allows your PC to use very little power, your PC starts up faster, and you’re instantly back to where you left off.
Used most often when you’re going to be away from your computer for a short period of time.
Hibernate
Use hibernate when you know you’re going to be away from your laptop for an extended period of time and you won’t able to charge it or change the battery.
Useful for road trips or any other extended period of time
The Change advanced power settings will allow you to configure the need to enter a password to revive the devices as well as configure wireless adapter settings and the system cooling policy.
Credential Manager Applet
This control panel applet allows you to store + view stored logon information for websites, web-based applications, and networks.
It stores usernames and passwords in an encrypted database.
Can also store website certificates if need be, but is uncommon.
Programs and Features Applet
This control panel applet allows you to view and uninstall desktop applications that are installed in the Windows OS.
You can also view the uninstalled updates on the left side of the applet
This applet also allows you to install and remove features in the Windows OS such as Hyper-V, Internet Exlporer 11, and Windows Powershell 2.0.
Homegroup Applet
This control panel applet allows you to easily share files (documents, pictures, folders) and printers for home (local) users by joining with a simple password.
A local network for the home
Only available in Windows 7 + Windows 8
A homegroup allows anyone with the right password to view all of the shared resources on all devices connected to the group.
Devices and Printers Applet
This control panel applet allows you to manage external devices such as hard drives, printers, web cams, TVs, etc.
From this control panel applet, you can add/remove printers, check the properties of all the devices, and view the queue.
From the control panel applet, you can also discover and add new devices that are connected to your network.
Much less complex than Device Manager
Sound Applet
This control panel applet allows you to view and change the default playback and recording device for sound on the system.
It also allows total control over system sound theme, audio input (recording) , audio output (playback) and all other properties.
Sounds linked to certain actions are located here; Ex: The sound you hear when you receive an email.
Troubleshooting Applet
This control panel applet allows for the troubleshooting of programs, hardware and sound, network and internet, and system and security.
Contains windows self-repair and diagnostic tools.
It has one notable feature: application compatibility troubleshooting.
This feature identifies any application that is problematic, the troubleshooting wizard will appear and windows will try to troubleshoot the application compatibility.
Network and Sharing Center Applet
This control panel applet allows you to view and change the active network connections for the OS.
Device Manager Applet
This control panel applet just launches the regular device manager which allows you to view + change hardware devices on the OS, and load and update third party drivers
The first place to check when there are hardware problems.
This control panel applet is a low-level full disk encryption feature which encrypts the entire system and all of its files
TPM (Trusted Platform Module) is a computer chip that can securely store artifacts used to authenticate the platform.
TPM holds the keys to the vault basically.
A TPM is recommended when using bitlocker, but if you don’t have one you can use a flash drive and a password as a substitute.
Sync Center Applet
This control panel applet allows you access data even when you’re not connected to the network.
Meaning you can take your laptop away from the network, work on some documents or make changes to those documents, and then when you’re reconnected to the network Sync Center will save those changes and sync whenever you’re back online.
Not available in Windows Home edition
