How to use leverage to move the coach from “interested” to “scholarship offer”
General power principles
We want what everyone else wants
We want what we can’t have
If it’s too easy, we become disinterested (the chase)
This stuff doesn’t make up for a lack of talent, but it can speed up the process if you’re a good fit for the school
Should I mention the other schools I’m talking to?
Yes, definitely
Keep in mind — the coach is probably talking to other players about the spot/scholarship you want
Even if the coach doesn’t ask, find a way to slip it in
Don’t be a jerk about it...just be up front and honest with the coach
If you’re getting ready to make a decision...
Tell the schools where you’re at
If there are schools on the fence, tell them that you’re proceeding with or without them (don’t phrase it like this) — they’ll be forced to make a decisive decision on you
In JUCO, I told the coaches “I’m taking 3 visits, and I need time to organize the trips.”
Deadlines are incredibly effective if you’ve been building leverage (like we’ve talked about)
Scholarship Negotiation
“He who cares least in negotiation, wins.” — we cannot afford to appear desperate.
If you don’t like the scholarship % a school offers you, ask if you can apply for an academic scholarship to compliment it.
If you’re serious about not attending a school because of the scholarship %, mention your other offers to put pressure on the school (don’t be a jerk, but be honest)
