HANDHELD THOUGHTS

Allow us to move quickly.
give a naturalistic feel.
Allow us to work the filming around the actors, not the actors around the filming.
Think how we can cut together something that is handheld or even improvised. I don’t want to end up with lots of great moments that don’t cut together.
Think about how we could combine handheld with tripod shots. Start with a tripod master?
Why not everything handheld?
I want handheld for freedom...but shots should be smooth...only jerky when appropriate to whats on screen.
You can cut in wide shots of the forest and the mounds at any point.
Get a few shots of outside the cottage at day and night.
Get each character in ECU with various looks. Explain to the actors why you need this.

SHOT IDEAS

Get a wide of a mound that we can cut back to at anytime to give a forbidding sense.
Get lots of wides outside the house.
Maybe a shot sweeping into the house from the front.
Connect the younger Bridget to the older in a single shot. Eg Child drops down to tie her shoe lace, comes up as woman (obviously this exact one is tricky but something)
Get some wides of people from behind, so you can dub in them saying anything.

GENERAL APPROACH

Name the key shots we must get in each scene.
Dont waste time on inserts of shots we can get without the actors
Always be shooting

CINEMATOGRAPHY REFS

“The prestige” has a handheld approach that seems to ground the historical setting in an interesting way.
Do want to shoot coverage in some sense, really for safety.

CU with shallow DOF, might allow us to do street filming without worrying too much whats in the background

I love odd framings
