We are consciously using the word “Vicharak” rather than “Parcharak” that many are used to. Why? Because Parchar implies preaching, which isn’t what we are solely aiming to do with this service (but we can also). What we want to encourage more of is a discussion rather than a lecture. This means it is more of a two-way, exploratory process where there may be an opportunity for both sides to learn something and share ideas and perspectives.
What we need then, are individuals who love the “art of discussion” to facilitate such conversations and offer suggestions to Sangat who may be seeking answers to various things. Crucially, you will not be speaking from a position of authority as if what you are saying is the sole interpretation. Your Vichaars will be guidance, not gospel. Simply sharing what understandings have helped you, and revealing the nature of your personal relationship with the Guru so that it may too help others via inspiration.
If you feel like this is for you, please consider signing up to our database of contacts. When we get a request, we will send out an alert to see who is available.
Vicharaks from Bunga Azaadi will be available to discuss, debate and attempt to answer any questions a client and their family may have. No question is off limits, especially if they have any doubts. Rather than brushing them under the carpet, we want to instead shed light on them and see if we can resolve them. If we truly believe in the truth of Sikhi, then why would we ever shy away from a topic related to it?
Families are encouraged to prepare their questions in advance, and Vicharaks will go through them. This can be done anonymously too!
A particular priority should be given to the children who may be growing up with false impressions of what Sikhi is and is not. They will be the next generations, so catering towards them is critical. No question is off limits provided it is asked respectfully.
Curriculum
Additionally or alternatively, Sangat may just want to hear some Vichaars too. Therefore, the following curriculum has been prepared based primarily on the “(Not Just) The Basics of Sikhi” Vichaar Repository hosted by Bunga Azaadi. Vicharaks are encouraged to study these so that they can share them with Sangat who request this service. You don’t have to agree with or strictly adhere to it word by word, but it should hopefully help structure your Vichaars in a coherent way. So you can use it as something you want to do Parachar of, or feel free to use this as a basis/springboard for your own Vichaars.
The following topics are what is covered in this curriculum: (will add links to appropriate Vichaar Repos soon)
Definition of "God" in Sikhi
Free-Will vs Determinism
Strategy of Bani and dealing with supposed “contradictions”
Life after death
Sikhi is not a “belief system” — what is it and how to progress?
Why is there suffering?
We believe that these are a good order in which to organise Sikh “metaphysics” and theology since it will cover what exactly our “belief system” requires as a base, then unveil how Bani probably should be read (the “strategy”) so to avoid over-literalism, appreciation of metaphor and also recognition of the fact that the Guru is Jagat Guru, so will talk to audiences at their particular level of competency. Which would then lead nicely on to how to deal with apparent “contradictions” that may arise if the above isn’t secured as a pre-requisite. Then lastly, can explain the “layering” of Sikhi and how to progress. This will naturally reveal the distinctions between Sikh and the Khalsa, and thus reaffirm the status of the Khalsa as Guru too.
This will also give us an opportunity to learn as well! We need to encourage Sangat to question and wrestle with the ideas we present so that we can abandon bad ideas for better ideas. This will allow us to bulletproof interpretations over time by “market-testing” to identify where any potential gaps are. By addressing these, our Vichaars will be better and better over time.
