personal development is at the core of our mission. when people increase in their chosen professional field/skill, they bring that to the workplace. it also develops soft skills and problem solving skills, and is a fundamental component to building a “learning organization.”
::theory::
what is the point? ultimately, it’s you. whether you’re trying to save your soul from the damnation of hell, or whether you’re reading books on economics written by nobel prize winners such as “identity economics.” the starting point for everything is the “canvas of you:” your intelligence, friends, character, beliefs, underlying narratives, hobbies, passions, etc. all these things coalesce to create you. now that you have you (the point), then what is what you do (the pointer)? we hope you bring you (the point) to us (the pointer). focus on all the sauce that makes you, and make something efficient and effective with it. this is the starting point of the hand.
asabiyyah: in order to have community, you have to have friends and belonging to something larger than you. in order to have that, however, you have to have interests, commonality, and other things that bring you together with people... so we arrive back at you. the subtitle of this page is “personal mastery.” we highly encourage everyone to have a pursuit to mastery of their professional skills and also have productive leisure activities.
a man named Musashi wrote a book called “five rings” around the year 1650. a swordsman himself - the book is about how to be a proper martial artist in times of martial combat. he killed over 80 people in war times throughout his life, and later wrote a book on it. his personal insight into the inner aspect that gave him this military prowess... poetry and painting. through those, in his own words, is what gave him the ability he had. likewise with our organization. mastery and leisure activities are two edges of the same sword, and with the twain you can benefit from both - both professionally and personally.
::application::
the application of the point is personal mastery itself: continually working on your skills on the never ending pursuit of personal mastery. the books listed below are some of my favorite books for “personal development.” together they create a usable mental model (spoiler alert for page 2) to commence on your journey. we intend to implement a “learning platform” (spoiler alert for page 4) to give you community and reference points on this journey. this is entirely your prerogative; what you do in your personal time - in terms of personal and professional development - is what you bring to work.
