4. Play-by-play

Introduction

Gather up your pens, markers and notepads. It’s time to discuss taking play-by-play notes of the game that you are covering. You notes will have help you determine the key points in the game that you will want to focus on. The play-by-play notes will help you guide your questioning during the press conferences and with writing your stories. Prepare several sheets for your play-by-play when covering basketball and football. With baseball and softball you can use a standard scorecard. Put the visiting team on the left and home team on the right and you’re ready to start watching and reporting.

Learning objectives

Activity 4_1
Watch an NBA game and keep play-by-play. Post a picture of your play-by-play sheet to the 04pbp1 channel for your instructor. In a comment on that picture, explain the key trend, run or play that you think determined the outcome of the game.
Compose at least two tweets during the game noting important plays, streak or run. Hashtag #introsports22 and tag your instructor:
(if you type “#introsports22 @welchsuggs,” your tweet shows up in the Team Suggs Twitter channel on Slack. Same for Team Led and Team Johnston.)
Activity 4_2
Watch an NBA or college basketball game (men’s or women’s). Keep PxP (but you won’t turn it in). At the end of the game, write a 45-60 second script for a standup explaining the key play that determined the outcome of the game. Record yourself and upload to YouTube or another file-sharing service and post a link to the 04pbp2 channel for your instructor.
In the text section of YouTube, post three takeaways about the team and the game.
Activity 4_3
Read these two “takeaways” stories:
Which do you find most informative? Did you learn anything new about the Falcons from either? What makes these different (length/# of takeaways don’t count)? Writing style? Items the writer focuses on? Other? Write a short post in the 04pbp3 channel for your instructor.

Field assignment

Prep (your instructors will gather data from teams involved)

Who are the key players for each team and what have critical moments been?
Are there particular areas of the game at which either team excels?
Share a document with this information via DM before the game with your instructor the night before the game to which you’re assigned.

Play-by-play In-game

Keep play-by-play on your scorecard and turn in by taking pictures at game’s end. Send pictures by DM to your instructor.

Postgame

At the conclusion of the game, write a summary and submit pictures of your stat sheets. Then, write a short script describing how the key play(s) determined the game outcome.
Record and submit a video recap focusing on the key play of the game(45-60 seconds). Upload to YouTube and DM link, along with your script, to your instructor within 90 minutes of the game ending.
Follow-up assignment
Two days after the game, write up a list of five takeways from the game. Submit by DM to your instructor by 11:59pm on that day.
