The Household Account Model is the bedrock of NPSP.


The Household Account represents everyone related to one another and living at the same address. Why is this important? A person who gives is traditionally recognized by thanking everyone in the household.
Unless otherwise indicated, nonprofits assume that your donation came from the available funds that the family had to spend, so you want to recognize them that way. Take a look at the model below. You see the account at the center and multiple contacts attached to the household account.

How do I create a Household?

To create a household, the best practice is to create the contact and let Salesforce's NPSP automation do the rest. Never create the Household Account from the Accounts tab first. Give it a try in your practice org!
