Affiliations are relationships between one contact and one organizational account. They take the place of an individual being related to a business.
In Sales Cloud, you may have Burlington Textiles Corp of America as an Account and Jack Rogers as a contact on the account.
Sales Cloud Contacts are attached to Accounts like this:
📣 IMPORTANT: Contacts can never have an Organization as their Account in NPSP. Contacts ALWAYS belong to Households.
Affiliation records are created to link a business and a contact.
Jack would have his own household and have a Primary Affiliation of Burlington Textiles Corp.
The same relationship in the example above 👆 looks like this in the NPSP Data Model:
You’ll notice on Burlington’s account record and Jack Rogers contact record that there is one affiliation record: “AF-000090.” However, the related list has a different label on the contact than account:
On accounts, it is labeled as “Affiliated Contacts” On contacts, it is listed as “Organization Affiliation” 💡 As an admin, you could change the label on the page layout to list both as “Affiliations” from the Object Manager in Setup.
Additional Global Affiliation Settings
Affiliations can be set to automatically create when a contact’s “Primary Affiliation” field is completed or changed. This is enabled by default but can be unchecked in NPSP Settings - Relationship Settings.
