NPSP allows you to create a relationship record between two contacts.
Any kind of human-to-human relationship can be set up in Salesforce. See some examples below:

A relationship can allow for auto-association of the Related Contact when the Contact gives a donation and an Opportunity is created through Opportunity Contact Roles.
For the example in the screenshot below, Mattia is Nina’s friend. If Mattia gives a donation, Nina can automatically have an Opportunity Contact Role of a Soft Credit, Solicitor, or Tribute.
If Nina is on the board of the nonprofit and has committed to ask Mattia for a donation, we would select Solicitor as the Related Opportunity Contact Role.
From now on when Mattia gives a gift, Nina will automatically be listed as the Solicitor in the Contact Roles related list:
Additional Global Relationship Settings
Relationships can be set to be automatically created in NPSP Settings. For example: Relationship records can be set to auto-create based on custom contact lookup fields like “Referred by.”
