Recruiting

WHO YOU’RE LOOKING FOR

SMALL GROUP LEADERS: We’re looking for people who always find a way to make things fun, love meeting new people and have a knack for breaking down big ideas into bite-sized pieces.
NURSERY TEAM: We’re looking for people who are calm under pressure, handle responsibility well and have a gentle spirit.
CHECK-IN TEAM: We’re looking for people who are calm under pressure, warm, welcoming and detail-oriented.
HOSTS & WORSHIP LEADERS: We’re looking for the sort of person who is naturally fun and has no problem making a fool out of themselves. They should be the type of person who’s never met a stranger and can make anyone feel like they’re the most important person in the room. Kids should see this person on the street and immediately want to run up and give them a high-five or a fist-bump.

HOW TO FIND VOLUNTEERS

Make the opportunities known.
Your team members love what they do! The best way to get your team growing is to remind them to let others know of the opportunities we have in the ministry. Remind your kids ministry team to chat with parents at the door, people at the Cafe and guests in the lobby to get the word out about the open positions here in Sandals Church Kids!
Invite a friend.
The most powerful way to build your team is through personal invitations. When a personal relationship comes before a request, people will be far more open to hearing what you have to say. Start looking for people you know who would be a good fit for your team based on the descriptions above. Is there someone in your Community Group who’s looking for a place to serve? Is there someone you see at church every weekend who hasn’t yet found a team to be a part of?
Don’t limit yourself to your circle of friends. Let the people who are already on your team help out! If they feel like they are growing and making a difference, then they’ll want that for their friends too. Make sure you give them an idea what that process looks like. Use the tips below as a starting point.
TIP #1: Make it personal.
There’s a big difference between sending a group text to everyone in your phone and personally inviting someone you know. Whether it’s in person or over text, make your invitation personal by keeping it one-on-one.
TIP #2: Make it specific.
If you say something like, “You should come and serve with me sometime in Sandals Kids,” it can be easy for them to disregard it or forget about it because it wasn’t specific. Instead, be clear and try something like, “I’d love for you to join me next Sunday at the 10am service to see what our kids ministry is all about.”
TIP #3: Make it exciting.
Let them know you want something for them, not from them. Share with them what kind of difference they can make by being a part of our team, what kind of community they can build here, and the joy they can get from doing it.
Recruit parents.
Parents are a great resource for volunteer recruitment. A productive strategy for recruiting parents is to create a warm and welcoming “come and see” atmosphere. Parents can be inspired to serve by being a part of their child’s experience in your kids ministry, and giving back to the ministry. An important approach to encouraging parents to serve is having “entry level” serving opportunities to accommodate parent’s busy lives.
Make the most of church-wide serving campaigns.
There may be times in which our entire church makes a strategic push for people to join a team. During that campaign, you’ll have people who express interest in joining the kids ministry team. Though it may seem like a small step to us, it might be a huge step of faith for someone to sign up for our team. We want to honor that by following up quickly and guiding them through the process in a clear and simple way.
You might also want to find ways to celebrate with your team. For example, you might consider making a New Team Members board in your Volunteer Lounge that shows the first name of each and every person who has expressed interest in joining the kids ministry team during the church-wide campaign. You can encourage your team to be praying for the people on that board and even celebrate when each person is ready to begin serving.
Other Demographics
Youth and young adults groups at Sandals as well as local college events are a great place to start recruiting new volunteers - many young people are looking to gain experience and references for the future. When your campus hosts events for Cultivate or community groups, have a presence at those events and make it known that there are openings in the kids ministry. You can also piggy back off “serving-themed” messages by sending kids ministry volunteer opportunities to the staff member who run these ministries at your campus.
