The local values can make the character easily recognizable but also bring the eye to the desired point of focus by having higher contrasts between black and white at that/these spot(s).

Big-Medium-Small

In terms of shape
In terms of concentration of details (typically we’ll tend to clump small shapes together around small spots to give a clear idea for the viewer to what they should look at, especially next to big areas that dont contain much detail) - use Arucelli’s twitch saved part of VOD & the video of the chinese guy drawing the dragon girl
Big-medium-small can also apply to smaller shapes inside of shapes.
