Initial Email to Teachers

Letting teachers know about your child's concussion is crucial to their recovery

Things to include

Ask about what work was missed
Ask about expectations for missed work (request extra time)
Ask for accommodations if needed

Example initial email from parent to teacher

Subject Line: [Name]’s Return to Learn Plan

Hi Teacher,

[Name] has been in sensory deprivation mode for over a week and, after a couple of setbacks, finally seems to be concussion symptom-free. However, they have not been able to focus for more than 15 minutes at a time. Previous attempts have re-triggered severe headaches.

We are hopeful that they will gradually ease back into regular activities starting next week. As they missed 6 days of school so far, [Parent(s) Name(s)] would like to request a meeting with you to discuss how to help them catch up on the work that they missed during their absence and what kind of accommodations going forward are realistic. Unfortunately, we expect that this will be a longer process than originally projected.

Please let us know when it would be convenient for you to meet with us. We are flexible to meet before school, during lunch, or after school. Thank you so much for your understanding and support.

Respectfully,
[Parent(s) Name(s)]
