What is social responsibility, and what role does an organization play in and for civil society? In this video, we're talking about navigating shared resources and the societal impact of organizations. To do so, we first want to understand that organizations have a responsibility to consider the development, consumption, and preservation of common resources—such as civil safety, forests, or water—resources that are used by the general public and also by organizations.
In the second step, we want to analyze how organizations can contribute to societal well-being through philanthropic efforts, such as sponsorship, education, or other initiatives. Let's look at an example. Some responsibilities of organizations are directly established in their purpose. Consider the Red Cross. The Red Cross, by definition, is an organization that embraces and promotes public safety and public security. These are public goods that everyone depends on and uses to a certain degree.
For instance, the Red Cross is a company that produces security as a public good by preparing for potential disasters and helping when disasters occur. It provides lifesaving help during disasters and also runs rescue services. In many incidents, this organization helps and thereby reflects upon its role as an organization that provides security for people in our society.
Beyond that, the Red Cross encourages social engagement. As an organization, they educate people and provide social support. They educate people in first aid, provide assistance for senior scientists or citizens, offer opportunities for citizens to help elderly people, work for refugees, and promote volunteering. They encourage people to volunteer for the Red Cross and beyond, to volunteer for social projects. Therefore, the Red Cross, as an organization, generates and promotes social welfare in society.
Thinking about this example, the overall topic of this session is to ask ourselves: How can organizations contribute to the sustainable management of shared resources and at the same time actively address societal needs?
We ask ourselves three questions in this session. First: How can organizations, when we talk about these shared resources—these common-pool resources such as air (and air pollution) or water (and water overuse)—become part of the solution, contributing to society rather than being part of the problem by overusing these resources? How can organizations help society with issues and problems that may persist within society?
Keeping that in mind, we also ask: How can organizations contribute to the sustainable management of common-pool resources while balancing their own interests? Finally, we will examine the role that organizations play in addressing these challenges. This includes means such as philanthropy or sponsorship as one form of philanthropy, and how these may even align with the strategic goals of a firm. How can they do something good for society that, at the same time, aligns with what the organization wants to do?
To gain a better understanding of these topics, we are providing two different videos. The first is about the tragedy of the commons—the idea that overuse of shared resources leads to depletion, creating ecological, economic, and social challenges requiring collective solutions, including those by organizations. The second video is on organizational philanthropy—ways organizations can add to social well-being or societal well-being by collaborating with the general public or by running initiatives that positively impact society and societal well-being.
We know that as societies grow and develop, pressure on shared resources like water, air, or biodiversity increases. We also know that organizations have a responsibility to ensure their operations do not deplete or harm these resources. Organizations must adopt sustainable management practices and collaborate with different stakeholders to ensure these common-pool resources are well managed and not overused.
At the same time, organizations play a key role in society by addressing broader challenges through philanthropy, sponsorship, and education. We need to align organizational efforts with societal needs and expectations, while also considering the benefits for organizations. We are very much looking forward to the next video.
