The apartment should be squeaky clean on arrival (if it isn’t, let us know immediately and we’ll fix it).
You will find everything you might need to keep the apartment tidy in the cupboards, including dish soap, organic laundry detergent, hand soap, mops, brooms, floor towels and more.
Charles our trusty cleaner will come and clean after your visit (or during your visit for longer stays if you arrange this with us), so you don’t need to be overly pedantic before checkout. We just ask that you pick up after yourself during your stay and treat it like you would your own home.
Our main worries are cockroaches and flies; so please always put food scraps (and garbage) in the bin and don’t leave dirty dishes / pots out overnight; put them in the dishwasher or wash them by hand.
🚮 Trash and recycling
You can put all food scraps into the green bags in the white composting bin on the kitchen counter. Coffee grinds, egg shells, fruit, vegetables, but no meat in the composting bin.
You can put recyclable items, such as plastic, glass, cans, in the recycling bags in the two bins at the bottom of the broom closet.
Please put general garbage and meat/bones in the black garbage bag in the black kitchen bin.
Garbage room
Please don’t take out the garbage, composting, or the recycling at the end of your stay, as Charles will do this, (but if they get full sometime during your stay, you will need to take it to the garbage room). This room is next to the main gate. General garbage (black bag) goes in the black bins, recycling (clear bag) in the yellow bins, composting (green bags) in the black composting bucket).
There is a key for the garbage room in the apartment. Please remember to lock the garbage room again and to bring the key back!
Dishwasher
Everything can go into the dishwasher except these, which you should hand wash:
🙅 Wooden cutting boards - Since we use the eco-mode for the dishwasher, the boards tend to warp/break, from all the moisture of sitting in steam for 3 hours. 🙅 Sharp cutting knives - Apparently this blunts them a lot. Normal cutlery is OK. It takes 3.5h for the dishwasher to finish on eco mode; only run it when it is full (otherwise, select 1/2 mode). We run it at night and unpack in the morning.
Wooden floors
You can sweep or vacuum the wooden floors, if needed.
If you spill any liquid, please clean and dry this immediately, as our floors are oiled (not varnished), meaning water/liquid will get under the oil and stain the wood permanently.
If you need to mop, please only use the red mop with the spray bottle and only use the Better Earth organic wood floor cleaner (mix a small 5-10ml with a litre of water). Don’t use any bleach or other soaps or products on the floor.
🧺 Laundry
Washing
Feel free to use the eco-friendly laundry powder in the cleaning cupboard. Please only run the washing machine when you have a full load of laundry. It’s a small machine; so a full load is pretty small ;-) To save energy, select “cold” water or 20 degrees — We find that our clothes wash perfectly in cold water with this detergent. (And we’re pretty outdoorsy, so our clothes have been put to the test!) We generally use the “Mixed load” cycle, which takes 1 hour. Drying
Unfortunately, we don’t have a dryer. (Dryers are very unusual in South Africa.) Instead, you can air dry things:
There’s a wooden clothes horse in the main bedroom, middle cabinet. You can also hang things on the balcony. In the cleaning closet in the kitchen, you’ll find a yogurt tub with a clothes line & pegs, which is for this purpose. Please be careful to use lots of pegs and to always check the wind (it can get crazy and will take your clothes with it). Do not to leave clothes out on the balcony if you’re not home, in case the wind starts. Wash & dry (short time crunch)
If you don’t have time to air dry things, you can also go to on Kloof Nek road, a two minute walk from the flat. Using their machines, washing takes 30 mins & drying takes another 15-30 minutes. Wednesday cleaning (optional)
If you would like our trusty cleaner to come and tidy up during your stay, please let us know and we can arrange this. He is currently only available on Wednesdays for R500. He will arrive at 9am, sweep and mop the floors, dust the surfaces, clean all the rooms, and if requested, wash your sheets and towels and leave between 1-3pm. Ask him if you want your personal laundry done (washing or ironing). He has a key and code to let himself in and out of the flat, so it won’t matter if you are home or not. He has been working for us for years and for neighbours in the building for more than a decade, we really trust him, but it is still polite to not leave your money and valuables lying around. Remember to pay him R500 in cash for that day’s work.
Cleaning fee (end of stay)
After checkout, Charles will straighten up the flat again to the way it was before you checked in, so you don’t need to to scrub the place before checking out. Please leave R500 in cash on the cabinet for him.
Note that Charles won’t throw out any food (and the apartment might be empty for weeks after your departure), so please don’t leave food behind that may go bad on the counters nor in the fridge 🙏
See for a full checkout checklist.
