Cleaning

The apartment should be squeaky clean on arrival (if it isn’t, let us know immediately and we’ll fix it).
You will find everything you might need to keep the apartment tidy in the cupboards, including dish soap, organic laundry detergent, hand soap, mops, brooms, floor towels and more.
Charles will come and clean after your visit (or during your visit for longer stays), so you don’t need to be overly pedantic before checkout, but we just ask that you pick up after yourself during your stay and treat it like you would your own home.
Our main worries are cockroaches and flies; so please put food scraps (and garbage) in the garbage bin and don’t leave dirty dishes and pots out overnight; put them in the dishwasher or wash them by hand.

🚮 Trash and recycling

You can put all garbage and food scraps directly into the garbage bag in the kitchen bin.
You can put recyclable items, such as plastic, glass, tin, in the recycling bags in the two bins at the bottom of the broom closet.
When the bin is full and you need to put in a new one: the bags must be tied shut and you can put them in the garbage room, next to the main entrance gate. Normal garbage goes in the black bins, recycling in the yellow one. There is a key for the garbage room in the apartment, by the entrance or in the white console drawers underneath our photo wall. Please remember to lock the garbage room again and to bring the key back in the apartment.
You don’t need to take out the garbage or the recycling before checkout, as Charles will handle this.

Dishwasher

Everything can go into the dishwasher except these, which you should hand wash:
🙅 Wooden cutting boards - Since we use the eco-mode for the dishwasher, the boards tend to warp/break, from all the moisture of sitting in steam for 3 hours.
🙅 Knives - Apparently this blunts them a lot
It takes 3.5h for the dishwasher to finish; only run it when it is full (otherwise, select 1/2 mode).

Wooden floors

You can sweep or vacuum the wooden floors, if needed.
If you drop any liquid, please dry this immediately, as our floors are oiled (not varnished), meaning pools of water/liquid can get under the oil and will stain the wood permanently.
If you need to mop, please only use the red mop and only use the Better Earth organic wood floor cleaner (mix a small 5-10ml with a litre of water). Don’t use any bleach or other soaps or products on the floor.

🧺 Laundry

Washing
Feel free to use the eco-friendly laundry powder in the cleaning cupboard.
Please only run the washing machine when you have a full load of laundry. It’s a small machine; so a full load is pretty small :-)
To save energy, select “cold” water or 20 degrees — We find that our clothes wash perfectly in cold water with this detergent. (And we’re pretty outdoorsy, so our clothes have been put to the test!)
We generally use the “Mixed load” cycle, which takes 1 hour.
Drying
Unfortunately, we don’t have a dryer. (Dryers are very unusual in South Africa.) Instead, you can air dry things:
There’s a wooden clothes horse in the main bedroom, middle cabinet.
You can also hang things on the balcony. In the cleaning closet in the kitchen, you’ll find a yogurt tub with a clothes line & pegs, which is for this purpose. Please be careful to use lots of pegs and to check the wind (it can get crazy!). We advise you not to leave clothes out if you’re not home, in case the wind starts whipping up.
Wash & dry (short time crunch)
If you don’t have time to air dry things, you can also go to the Joe Soap laundromat on Kloof Nek road, a 5 minute walk away. Using their machines, washing takes 30 mins & drying takes another 15-30 minutes.

Wednesday cleaning (optional)

If you would like our trusty cleaner Charles (who has been working for neighbours in the building for the past decade) to come and tidy up during your stay, please let us know and we can arrange this. He is currently only available on Wednesdays. He will sweep and mop the floors, dust the surfaces, clean all the rooms, and if requested, wash your sheets and towels. However, he won’t be responsible for any of your personal laundry (washing or ironing).

Cleaning fee (end of stay)

After checkout, Charles will straighten up the flat again to the way it was before you checked in, so you don’t need to to scrub the place before checking out. Please leave R400 in cash on the cabinet by the WiFi / nannycam for him.
Note that he won’t throw out any food (and the apartment might be unoccupied for weeks after your departure), so please don’t leave food behind that may spoil on the counters nor the fridge 🙏
See for a full checkout checklist.
