Women in sports

Introduction

The way I’ve divided this class may seem a little simplistic, but I think it will work. For a couple of weeks, we’re going to look at the history of women in American sports, primarily in the context of college sports but with reference to both the pros/Olympians and high school/developmental programs. We’ll also talk about some current issues and consider where things are headed for female athletes.

Activity

What have you been told about the differences—or similiarites—between men and women when it comes to sports? Write a short post in the 03_simm_diff channel in Slack and comment on a classmate’s by Sept. 6.

Assignment

Weekly reflection: What do you see as the next step in the growth of sports for women? Is it the popularization of relatively new sports like lacrosse and field hockey? Growth of more-established sports like soccer or softball? Or something in another direction altogether? Write a medium-length (3-4 paragraph) post in the 04_wr1_growth channel by Sept. 10.
