Introduction

This will be a fairly short look primarily at the current state of women in media and a consideration of how roles for women have evolved over the past couple of decades. We will also talk about the challenges women face and the advantages they enjoy in media roles. While the next section is officially titled “women in sports media,” we will talk a lot about sports in this section as well

Activity

What is the biggest misconception people have had about you as a woman? Have people ever doubted your abilities “because you’re a girl?” Or have you gotten a pass for being female? Or, on the other hand, do you feel like you’ve always/usually been perceived fairly and without regard to gender? Write a short post in the 05_misconception channel in Slack.
On Thursday, Sept. 16, we’ll be joined by Nicole P. Williams, one of our alumnae, who is now senior director of sports at SnapChat. We will have class via Zoom as Nicole is based in the Los Angeles area. Prior to joining SnapChat, Nicole worked as a digital producer at Bleacher Report and at ESPN. At UGA, Nicole was not only one of our first students but also a member of the track team. She has won a number of professional awards for her work including, most recently, being celebrated as one of Hashtag Sports’ Creators of Color.
