Why We Need to Lament in Worship

Gathered worship gives us a vocabulary and a set of tools with which to relate to God. If worship doesn’t give us a roadmap for how to relate to God when we are suffering, we might grow bitter toward Him because we don't have any categories for relating to Him in pain. Worship without lament subconsciously teaches us that pain and suffering must be outside of His will or even that God is punishing us for our sin—which is wrong because God settled that in the cross! The Psalms—God’s only fully inspired, truly infallible songbook—are filled with lamentation, and through them, we learn to pray our tears and anxieties. We are given a vocabulary of worship through (not in spite of) suffering.
