The detailed origins are unknown, but we do know that the practice of lighting the Advent Wreath began centuries ago in Eastern Germany. Advent, being a season of anticipation of Christ’s coming, is beautifully pictured in the Advent Wreath. The wreath is circular and made of evergreen leaves, both of which symbolize the unending nature of our life when we put our faith in Jesus Christ. Each week an additional red candle is lit, symbolizing the growing light as Christ’s coming drew near. The white middle candle (the Christ candle), which we are lighting today, symbolizes the unsurpassed purity of Jesus.
