You will notice that after the introduction of a sermon, the preacher will sometimes take a moment to stop and pray. This is often called a prayer of "illumination" or "enlightenment". We need the Holy Spirit to help us rightly understand the word of God. The preacher is praying along with the congregation that we would have ears to hear and eyes to see the meaning and purposes of scripture. Rather than leaning on our own understanding, we need to rely on the Holy Spirit to bring light and guide us into truth. (Eph 1:17-19)
